Fall ECT Meeting Overview

I wanted to let you know what FUN and EXCITING things we had the opportunity to share with ECTs today :)

Tech Apps Test w/ Doug
Doug took some time to look at the 8th grade Tech Apps Test and an overview of the results...showing strengths and weaknesses. We really wanted them to see what a big, important piece of the technology puzzle they are with this session.

Excelerating Charts w/ Jane
Additional time was spent in Excel with a focus on creating charts. The results of last year's Tech Apps Test showed this to be an area of need...we hope that this little review helps!

Timelines, Tidbits, and Tools w/ Dana
1. Boolean Searching w/ boolify.org.
2. GOOGLE Tools: Wonder Wheel and Timeline
3. Review of ECLC and the importance of following timelines.
4. Introduced a new tool, Glogster EDU. This is a tool, which was highlighted in the CIT Newsletter as a "Virtual Bulletin Board" or Graphic Blog...Glog. Joyce and I introcuced this tool as a way for them to have a web presence. The idea being a place where they can highlight things that are going on in the lab to share out with your campus communities...as well as each other.

We would ask your help in providing a space for them to link from...either on your Outreach page or another existing Dreamweaver page. Once the Glog is created, it generates a link. The link is the same and doesn't change with any edits and updates you do to the page. Pretty cool!

Here is a link to the entire session agenda I created for Timelines, Tidbits, and Tools. You will find my ECT Glog Sample there :)

I also sent them a reminder of NISD Web Publication Guidelines for Student Work. Knowing that as they think about their Glog and what they might like to share...they knew what guidelines to keep in mind and what permissioning is needed. I referred them to you for details and guidance on your campus process for acquiring the "Parental Permission Form for Web Publishing."

This vision of an ECT Lab web presence is new...and will grow. I encouraged them to begin the process and using the Glog tool as they are comfortable. Some will begin today (I've heard from two who began during their lunch!) and some will wait a bit. That is OK! We plan to build in work time during our February 2010 Spring ECT Meeting for them to have work time as well.

Thanks for your support and let me know if you have any questions :)

ECT Meetings for 2009-2010

Please make sure the ECT meetings for this year are on your calendar. The first one is this week! We appreciate everything you all do to cover the labs so they are able to join together for their staff development.

We provided these dates to them during their "ECT Start-Up," but I don't think we did a good job sharing the dates with YOU ALL directly. We will do better and be more mindful of that in the future. We know how busy your schedules are and having these on your calendar as early as possible is needed. I apologize.

2. Ask your administrator to include it in the campus weekly staff bulletin.

3. Print out a copy of the program and hang it by each faculty LOOS :)

NISD 2.0 Fall Technology Mini Conference

Excerpts from a recent email from Joyce Stevens, Director of Academic Technology—
Academic Technology now has the complete listing of sessions in the upcoming NISD 2.0  Fall Technology Mini-Conference! As you may recall, this will be a Saturday morning, November 14th, with two 1.5-hour session choices available: 8:30-10AM and 10:15-11:45 AM. Ten sessions will be offered, each of them repeated, for a total of 20. Each session is listed in the ERO system.

These should be very strong sessions, appealing to CITs, CTFs, Librarians, and all K-12 technology-using educators. Please get the word out to your staff about the availability of these classes.

Here is a link to the TechBeat.pdf Joyce recently emailed—http://technews.nisd.net/athayes/files/2009/10/TechBeat.pdf. You can reference this link for access to it, just right-click and [Copy Shortcut] and paste that into your email or blog article. This way we are not emailing out a bunch of copies of the same file to everybody. They can just reference a single source.
