Windows 7 Comes to Northside!
Communications Arts High School became the first campus in the District to receive new computers (nearly 340 of them) with the Windows 7 operating system last month. Technology Services worked closely with the CAHS teachers and administration on this pilot project, which was deemed a success by all involved. Both before, during and after the deployment, focus groups addressed functionality and usability of the new operating system, application testing to ensure that instructional and operational software worked correctly, desktop security, infrastructure components, computer performance, and training materials.
The District is transitioning to Windows 7 from Windows XP largely because Microsoft will be ending support for the older operating system, and also because compatible hardware drivers for XP are becoming less and less available. As added benefits, Windows 7 makes our computers start up faster and makes teacher-laptop/docking more seamless.
Bond 2010 includes $940,000 for Windows 7 licenses for older eligible computers, while new computers are now purchased with Windows 7. Due to the success of the CAHS project, Windows 7 will next be deployed at Westwood Terrace, Raba, Neff, Powell, Cable, HCHS, Rudder, Krueger, Stevens, Clark, Marshall, Jay, Lieck, and Mireles.
