NEW Re-Purposing Guidelines
(published in Principal's Bulletin 6-15-2010)
Historically, campuses have been permitted to re-purpose an unlimited number of older computers at deployment time as long as they had a reasonable plan for their use.
RECOMMENDATION APPROVED BY CABINET, 6/8/10:
Beginning with deployments in summer 2010, campuses may only re-purpose a finite number of computers on the network.
The finite number will be: no more than the number of classrooms + 5 (less than this is fine).
With this rule in place, each campus can take advantage of wired connectivity capacity (as space and need allow) and still have significantly more computers than they've ever had before due to UPDATED Technology Bond Standards. As always, only computers within their support life cycle can be put on the network; others may be used in stand-alone fashion (i.e. not on the network).
RATIONALE:
1. UPDATED Technology Bond Standards will result in significantly more new computers for campuses than ever before. (See attached summary.)
2. The cost of re-purposing older computers is significant (hundreds of thousands of dollars annually).
3. The performance of 5-6 year old computers is lacking when compared to newer computers (slow, cannot run newer software, etc.), but their parts can often be put to good use.
4. Each classroom is potentially pre-wired/cabled for five network devices.
5. Each classroom will have four network devices (1 phone, 1 teacher workstation, 2 student workstations) according to the UPDATED standard, so there is capacity for one more device per classroom. However, please note that it is not a requirement to add another computer to each classroom if it does not meet campus needs.
