Shadow Copy (feedback wanted)

I'm trying to gather information from you guys on Shadow Copy. If you are Active Directory, you have the ability to use this function to retrieve missing and/or deleted files from shared directories.

Please reply to this blog if you have any feedback to share...

1. Have you used Shadow Copy?
2. If so, what was the circumstance?
2. Any other feedback you would like to share is welcome.

  1. Haven't used it. Didn't know it was even available. Is there directions on how to do it? We just went to AD.

  2. I have used it several times...most recently when one of my teachers deleted (don't ask me how!) most of our Teacher Share folder on the I drive. I usually have to use it to retrieve files that have been moved or "rearranged" on the Student Drive. It has been a great tool to fall back on when someone has been careless, and it saves me having to put in a work order and then wait for one of the system administrators to take care of the issue.

  3. I have used shadow copy several times since receiving the training handout in a CIT meeting last year. Each time, it has been to recover children's work that was accidentally deleted (typically because a blank was saved on top of it). Having this capability has prevented my need to ask a Network admin to recover a lost file since Scarborough opened last year. I find that "shadow copy" is a very useful feature of Active Directory.

  4. Yes, it has been a savior. Numerous times I had teachers accidentally delete an entire network drive and I was able to get it right back up without having to bother the help desk. It has been wonderful and I hope you are not thinking about getting rid of it.

  5. Debbie, I'll get directions to you on Monday :)

Justin, there is no plan to get rid of it. I was asked to gather some feedback on how it is being used. Thank you so much for your feedback.

    Anyone else?

  6. Are you kidding? I use it about three times per week. Until we are able to lock down folders in the student and staff directories so that they are not accidentally dragged into mystery locations or even accidentally deleted, we will use it a lot.

I have used it to replace folders of student work. I have used it to restore lesson plan folders. I have used it to restore projects which have been accidently saved over.

    I think it is great.

  7. I have used Shadow Copy several times. I have used it when folders and files are "accidentally" removed from shared drives. I like the convenience and timeliness of being able to restore folders and files without having to place a work order. :-)

  8. I used it at Adams Hill when students deleted files, whether on purpose or accident. It was helpful most of the time. The only times it didn't help was if the teacher told me too far after the incident and I was unable to recover the files beyon a certain date. :) I am sure I will be using it again here at Ward this year!

  9. I love it, and like Jim said, use it often! Of course ideally, better priveldge management of the folders is ideal, but his is a great fix until that happens!

  10. I had to use the shadow copy several times last year because folders were deleted. It allowed me to retrieve entire grade level folders there were deleted. I anticipate using it again this year…

  11. I use it all the time, either to get back stuff teachers deleted or students deleted.

  12. Yes, I've used this a few times. When I needed it I was so glad I had the ability to restore folders to previous versions! Most of the time I'm recovering files due to student's accidently (I hope) deleting files.

  13. I also it very much and like the fact that I do not have to wait to get the staff help. :)

  14. 1. Yes, several times.
    2. Usually if teachers delete things from the shared drive that we need. Ocassionally for student issues. Mostly students just drag things to a nearby folder instead of deleting though, so I find those on my own pretty quickly.
    3. I love having this as an option. Please don't take it away! I'm sure the system administrators appreciate not being bugged by the CIT's for this anymore. ;0)

  15. I agree with everyone else. I use it when teachers or students delete work. Knock on wood this year has been better so far with that but it is still early. :)

  16. I have used it several times & LOVE it! Once a staff member accidentally deleted files from the Staff shared drive, & the next day I was able to locate & restore them without calling the helpdesk & waiting. I've used it to revert to previously saved versions of files that I changed & didn't want. Also, I've been able to recover student files that have been moved or deleted very quickly & easily. I LOVE THIS FEATURE!!

  17. Shadow copy is one of those empowering tools that allows us to expediently correct problems with accidentally deleted network files. Before shadow copy it took a tech workorder and the corresponding wait time to recover those deleted files. What at times took 24-48 hours now takes 1-2 minutes. I've used it at least monthly if not more often to recover files accidentally deleted from student and staff share drives.

  18. I have used it several times already and it has been a lifesaver. I found it very easy to use.

  19. I use shadow copy OFTEN. Having the ability to restore missing or deleted files has helped save me and my teachers from serious migraines. Unfortunately, students delete, move, save over folders and files so frequently that I feel a monthly re-teach lesson on file saving is in order. It's almost a daily occurrence for some of the younger ones. :(
I wised up and started using our read-only templates folder to prevent lessons from being deleted on the PROJECTS drive. It’s become common place for the WORK folder to get messy by day’s end so it’s just one of those things the ECT and I add to our list.
Any news on getting the ability to lock folders????? [fingers crossed]

  20. I haven't had to use it alot this year thank goodness. But I have had to use it to recover deleted student work that was accidently deleted. It is nice and a little bit quicker to be able to do this on your own. I like it alot.

  21. I have used it several times and I love it. It really helps with those students that are constantly losing stuff. I wish it was on the teacher's H: drive.

  22. I have also used it more times than I can count. Often times I will find the folder and just be able to move it back, but it is great to be able to have the Shadow copy option to recover files that are deleted or are completely MIA.
I know that the helpdesk is probably just as happy as I am that this is an item they don't have to take care of any longer.

  23. I agree with all the posted comments and have done the same. The shadow copy is a WONDERFUL tool! The days of calling a systems admin and digging out a back up tape seem so antiquated!! I bet Brian Hall REALLY loves the shadow copy just as much as CITs! :)

  24. Yes, I have used it to retrieve files deleted by students AND staff. It is very convenient but I wish we had more specific control of certain files rather than having to replace whole folders. But it is better than nothing, that's for sure!

  25. I have used it numerous occasions. I would hate to go back to the days where we had to get someone else to grab a backup copy of something that we could do much easier ourselves and save a lot of time and hassle. It adds a lot to efficiency.

  26. I use it almost every week. Losing or deleting a folder is no longer a big deal. Not only can I recover files and folders, I can check on activity in those folders.

  27. I used Shadow Copy today when someone deleted everything in our Work folder. It was a lifesaver!

  28. I have used it this year but only twice. I was very nervous when they first came to me about a folder missing. I pulled out my notes from my meeting with Dana but found out it was actually quite easy.
